Australian Wine Grape Varieties

There's one main difference between Australia and California: California is Zinfandel's place of origin. Australia wine has no vine it can exclusively call its own. Australian wine grape varieties first made their appearance in Australia in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries from Europe. Fortified wines were a common thing in warm climates, especially when spoilage was a serious problem. That’s the reason why, sweet Australian wines dominated the production, even up till today – Some of the best sherry outside Spain can be found in Australia.

Australian Wine Blends

The predominant Australian wine grape used in better wines is Syrah which is also known as Shiraz in Australia.. When you see Shiraz on the label, which, it must make up at least 85 percent of the bottle's contents. Australian wines are commonly consists of two wine grape varieties. The dominant grape comes first. For examples: Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz and Semillon/Chardonnay. Australian wine labels are very informative and easy to read. Most blended wines list their grape varieties on the label, the percentages of each grape are usually included. Take Note: There's no restriction on where the grapes used in blended wines are grown.
