About Mexican Wine

Mexican wine growing started in the 1500s but the vineyards seem to be on the decline by the beginning of 1900s. However, in the last 30 to 35 years, the Mexicans have rediscovered an enthusiasm for wine. This may be due to the return of the migrant workers who worked in the California vineyards. This is great as Mexican wine has proven that it can be some "superlative wine", especially those from the southern trench red varieties. When the conquistadores arrived from Spain in the wake of Columbia's voyages, Mexico was where they started their long journey through Central and South America.

Vines were planted on every settlement, so as to resemble life in Spain although the Mexican wine tasted very different from their Spanish counterpart.

Mexican wine Growing Region

Most of the Mexican wine growing regions concentrated in the north of the country near the United States border since the Spanish also once occupied California. Mexican wine prime growing regions are at the state of Baja California and Sonora where most of the internationally competing Mexican wines originated.

Mexican Wine Grapes Varieties

Mexican wine grape varieties are mainly from the southern France and from California. Mexican wine Grape varieties also include Zinfandel and Petite Sirah which has nothing to do with Syrah. Petite Sirah is another dark-skinned French grape, Durif. Petite Sirah also makes an excellent Cabernet. As for the whites, there isn’t really much distinguished Mexican wine varieties so far.
